Cooper Kupp has quietly become one of the best receivers in the National Football League during his fifth season with the Los Angeles Rams, bolstered by the brilliant downfield passing of former Detroit Lion Matthew Stafford.

Kupp, who played his college ball at Eastern Washington University, averaged 72 receptions over the course of his first four seasons in the NFL, but he has already topped that number just 9 games into the 2021-2022 season with 74 receptions.

On Monday, November 8, ESPN pointed out a startling stat that speaks to the historic nature of Kupp’s campaign so far, comparing him with the greatest of all-time, Jerry Rice.

Kupp On His Way to An All-Time Great Season?

Recently, Bleacher Report highlighted the top ten best seasons by a wide receiver in NFL history, and the number one finisher wasn’t Rice, Randy Moss, or any other widely known superstar — it was Don Hutson of the Green Bay Packers in 1942.

Hutson earned a “Triple Crown” that season with 74 receptions along with 1,211 yards and 17 touchdowns.

So far on the season, Kupp has 74 receptions himself for 1,019 yards and 10 touchdowns on 103 targets.

Two things stood out from this stat comparison to me; number one, it’s insane to think that a receiver like Hutson averaged over 16 yards per reception during the World War II era, when teams only averaged 123.7 yards passing compared with 242.7 today; and number two, that Kupp really is having a historic season in 2021-2022.

Kupp’s 1,019 receiving yards is more than 100 yards higher than the next closest receiver Deebo Samuel, who only has 49 catches so far this season.

With Stafford in the fold, Kupp could become one of the NFL’s all-time receiving leaders by the time his career is said and done.
