Former Hawaii quarterback Colt Brennan is far from a household name, but he happens to be among the most record-setting players in the history of college football a gifted athlete with a style, and personality, all his own.

Brennan broke 31 records during his playing career for the Warriors, finishing with a career completion percentage of 70.4%, which still stands as an NCAA record to this day.

He also finished third in Heisman Trophy race his senior year, a year after finishing in the sixth spot his junior year.

Brennan was known for his trademark sidearmed throwing motion, which he utilized both on the run and in the pocket to hit top playmakers like Ryan Grice-Mullen (106 catches for 1,372 yards and 13 TD in 2007 alone), Davone Bess (108 catches for 1,266 yards and 12 TD), Jason Rivers (92 catches for 1,174 yards and 13 TD) and C.J. Hawthorne (61 catches for 859 yards and 6 TD).

The Warriors finished #1 in total offense in Brennan’s senior year, racking up 439 yards per game passing; 512 yards altogether per game over the course of their 12-1 WAC Championship season that ended with a loss to Georgia in the Sugar Bowl.

Recently, Brennan sat down for an in-depth interview with host Wade Hampton Peery of the Flow Theory Podcast, a new show available on Google Podcasts, Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, Spotify, and TuneIn, can also be viewed in the YouTube player below.

Perhaps most surprising was his revelation that he smoked weed before practically every game, at every level of football, during a time when it was especially frowned upon by mainstream fans and society.

Highlights of the podcast (watch the video below) are as follows if you’d like to skip ahead:

3:54: Colt’s experiences of being “in the zone” at Hawaii

4:55: The defining game early in his career

17:39: How he developed a love for the game as a child

20:07: His sidearmed throwing motion and NFL coaches trying to change it

24:47: “Oh now you’re going to get me in trouble;” Colt describes his cannabis-infused pregame ritual:

“So I would go to pregame meal, the hotels here they all had balconies and everything, this is something that started in college, where I’d go to my balcony and roll a blunt, and I’d smoke a fat blunt, both in junior college and regular college…I would just be in the zone right then and there…”
