The Michigan Wolverines are coming off of an all-time great season in 2020-2021 after a Big Ten Championship, playoff appearance and a decisive 42-27 home victory over their arch-rival the Ohio State Buckeyes.

But the Wolverines’ 2021-2022 prospects for success are now being hotly debated after Head Coach Jim Harbaugh lost offensive coordinator Josh Gattis to the Miami Hurricanes and defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald to the Baltimore Ravens.

Recently, Harbaugh decided to act quickly by promoting two of his top offensive assistants, Offensive Line Coach Sherrone Moore and Quarterbacks Coach Matt Weiss, as co-offensive coordinators.

Moore served as Assistant Head Coach, Tight Ends Coach and Receivers Coach for Central Michigan in 2017 before joining with the Wolverines while Weiss served as an assistant quarterbacks coach for the Ravens in 2016 and running backs coach in 2019.

According to two of the team’s most talented players from last season, Harbaugh appears to have made a smart move, as McCarthy is among those who are fond of Weiss’ talents.

McCarthy called the 38-year-old a “genius” during a Wolverines Digest podcast heading into the 2021 season according to a report from SportsIllustrated.com.

“Genius might be an understatement,” said McCarthy.

“This guy is one of the most intelligent people I’ve ever been around and what I love the most about him is who he is as a person.

“What his values are, how he is every single day in the building – so consistent with who he is and how he goes about his business.”

“He’s just always been an awesome, awesome help for me. Probably the best thing I’ve learned from him is just sitting in the film room with him and letting him talk. He’s been at almost every position and his knowledge is untouched.

“It’s really awesome to pick his brain and see how he perceives things on the football field.”

According to the SI report, Weiss will likely stay on as quarterbacks coach as well.

All-Big Ten running back Hassan Haskins is also a big fan of both Moore and Weiss, according to a Tweet from Trevor Woods of MaizenBrew.com.
